It’s here! Medicare Prescription Drug coverage begins January 1, 2006.

Medicare beneficiaries who have enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan may now use their benefits. Insurance providers are sending clients a letter approximately 2-3 weeks after enrollment. Providers have indicated that the letter may be used at the pharmacy until the official insurance card arrives.
If you, or your loved one has not enrolled in a plan, it is not too late. Medicare beneficiaries may enroll in a prescription drug plan, without penalty, until May 15, 2006.
Are you still uncertain about how to choose a plan? Here are a few tips for narrowing the search:
- Make a list of all of the prescription medications that you are currently taking, including dosage.
- Decide if you have a pharmacy preference.
- If you have internet access, visit the website www.medicare.gov Remember that the public library offers free internet access. Also, teenage neighbors and grandchildren are often willing to help you navigate the computer.
- On the website, click on “Compare Medicare Prescription Drug Plans”. Follow the prompts on the screen. You will have an opportunity to enter your Medicare number, list your medications and choose a pharmacy. After entering this information, you will be able to view plans. The plans are listed in order of lowest premium.
- Read the detailed information on the top three plans. As you look at these plans you may have the option of choosing a plan without a deductible.
- Decide which plan works best for your situation.
Enroll—Follow the on screen instructions to enroll in the plan you select.
