What is a caregiver?

The term caregiver refers to anyone who provides assistance to someone else who is incapacitated and needs help:

• a husband who has suffered a stroke
• a wife with Parkinson's disease
• a mother-in-law with cancer
• a grandfather with Alzheimer's disease
• a son with traumatic brain injury
• a child with muscular dystrophy
• a friend with AIDS

Where Can Caregivers Get Support?

The AAA Caregiver program strives to ease the enormous demands placed on people taking care of elderly or functionally impaired loved ones by providing:

• information and referrals for caregivers
• emotional support through support group development and listening sessions
• community education for employers, faith-based ministries, and the general public

CARE-NET

As an affiliate of the Rosalynn Carter Institute, CSRA CARE-NET promotes awareness, education, and advocacy for caregivers across the lifespan. The CSRA CARE-NET provides a linkage between professionals, family members, and friends who are engaged in caregiving activities. Specifically, the tasks of the CSRA CARE-NET include:

• linking caregivers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds
• identifying needs of caregivers
• providing recognition and resources to family caregivers
• conducting a needs assessment to identify the CSRA’s capacity for supporting caregivers
