Centers for Disease Control
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services maintains a comprehensive SRTS website with links to health benefits, physical activity, safety and resource materials for starting a SRTS program.
FHWA – Safe Routes to School
The Federal Highway Administration administers Safe Routes to School funds made available by the federal Safe Routes to School program and legislation. FHWA provides guidance on SRTS programs and information on funding and resources.
League of American Bicyclists
The League of American Bicyclists is one of the largest bicycle advocacy groups in the nation. The organization’s website includes a section on SRTS, containing information on the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, a collaboration of bicycling and walking groups, health advocates, government agencies and businesses.
National Center for Bicycling & Walking
The National Center for Bicycling & Walking maintains one of the most comprehensive resources sites for bicycle and pedestrian planning. A special section on SRTS provides an overview of programs, activities, case studies, funding, data and links to other SRTS resources.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration operates programs and supports research for many pedestrian and bicycle-related safety issues. NHTSA provided much of the early support for Safe Routes to School programs, including administering SRTS pilot programs and funding numerous other guides and research activities.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center
Funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center is the largest bicycle and pedestrian planning portal. Three separate websites provide information on SRTS, including getting started resources, example programs, legislation & funding, training and studies.
Safe Kids
SafeKids is dedicated to preventing child injuries with communication, advocacy and media campaigns. The SafeKids website provides a list of current safety programs and upcoming events.
Surface Transportation Policy Project
The Surface Transportation Policy Project (STTP) is a nationwide network of more than 800 organizations, including planners, community development organizations, and advocacy groups, devoted to improving the nation’s transportation system. STTP includes a summary of SRTS programs based on a nationwide 2002 survey.
State Safe Routes to School Programs
Several states have already implemented the federal mandate to staff a full-time SRTS coordinator and develop resources for local SRTS programs. Some municipalities have also developed SRTS programs. Below are links to some of those programs.
